Broken-up words /Ælmu,qaţţaʕæ:t/ المُقَطَّعات are words comprising individual letters but the letter names are uttered individually. In a sense, they are like acronyms in English, except that they are not necessarily acronyms because neither God nor His messenger has told us their meaning.
All the translations I've consulted have transliterated these words. I'm inclined to do the same unless somebody comes up with a better suggestion. Thus, الٰم is translated Alif, Laam, Meem /Ælif Læ:m mi:m/
