{2:20} The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if God had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, God is over all things competent.

I'd only change "competent" to powerful. That's because the Arabic word is an "exaggeration pattern" صيغة مبالغة and that sense needs to be translated. "Competent" would be an acceptable translation of قادر, not قدير.

Agreed, and I am surprised they used such a weak word for it.

{2:19} Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darknesses, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But God is encompassing of the disbelievers.

{2:20} The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when it darkens over them, they stand [still]. And if God had willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Verily, God is over everything powerful.
