{2:26} Indeed, God is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did God intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,

I'd say "does not shy away from.." instead of "is not timid to..." because the source uses a verbal sentence, not a nominal one.

I also question the interpretation of فما فوقها as "or smaller." Literally the word means "or above it." I think that a straightforward translation would be "or higher."

The style "misleads not" is an old style. I'd rather use the modern English style "does not mislead."

Finally, الفاسقين does not mean defiantly disobedient. The Arabic word originates from the flesh of a date separating from its seed. It is used often in the Quran to refer to people who have distanced themselves from God by their actions. A translation that reflects that meaning better, IMHO, would be "the dissolute." Pickthall's translation of "the miscreants" is excellent, except that I think many readers won't know what the word means :)

So, I suggest this alternative translation:

{2:26} Verily, God does not shy away from striking any parable - that of a mosquito or higher. Then as for those who have believed, they know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who have disbelieved, they say, "What did God want by this as an example?" He lets stray thereby many and guides thereby many. But He does not let stray except the deviant.

This is such an obvious choice that I wonder why they even thought of "timid."

Again, I have no idea how they came up with "smaller."

I for one don't know what the word means :D.

Thank you for your explanation of الفاسقين. I will try to come up with a good translation.

As for verse 27, I suggest:

{2:27} Who topple the pledge to God after contracting it and sever what God has ordered to be joined and corrupt in the earth. It is those who are the losers.
